Swansea Univeristy Back <<

Swansea is a traditional university, founded by Royal Charter in 1920.
It is the third largest university in Wales in terms of number of students, and its campus is located next to the coast just outside Swansea city centre.

The University stands in parkland overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, Britain's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
London is 192 miles away, under three hours by train, and Cardiff, the capital of Wales, is less than an hour away.

  • King George V laid the foundation stone of the University in July 1920
  • Swansea was the 29th university to be established in the UK and began life with just 89 students
  • The city donated Singleton Abbey, the neo-Gothic Mansion that dates back to 1780, to the university
  • In 1921, Swansea appointed the first woman professor in a British university
  • Swansea University received the 2005 Times Higher Education Supplement Award for the UK's Best Student Experience

Most academic departments will ask for an IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) for postgraduate degrees. But there are exceptions and applicants should always check with the individual departments, or check the conditions included in their offer letter.

Applicants with English Language Proficiency Scores below IELTS 6.0 below the required level

In the case of applicants whose test scores fall below the required level, the University recommends English Language tuition in ELTS before the beginning degree-level studies.

  • have an English Language level of at least IELTS 5.5 or equivalent and need to improve this level to a 6.0 or 6.5 for University entry
  • can meet the English language entry requirements for a UK University but wish to improve their Study Skills and have a period of orientation before starting their University course
6.5 IELTS requirement

IELTS Entry Scores Duration
5.5 10 weeks
6.0 5 weeks

There are 2 entry points to the course so students can attend for either 10 or 5 weeks. Students who have not yet reached the required IELTS or equivalent level should attend for the full 10 weeks.
